Marker - Headstone Cleaning

The headstone is the first thing we see when we visit or notice a cemetery. Headstones can be made of granite, marble, sandstone, limestone, and sometimes other materials. The headstone contains important generalized information that is intended to last for future generations. Many marble stones not only contain information, but are also amazing works of art. Regardless of the material, all headstones are exposed to the elements and time. Pollutants, acid rain, dirt, bird droppings, molds, algae, lichens all lead to deterioration. Proper cleaning with a biological solution can remove harmful elements and prolong the life of the stone. We practice no harm methods. All cleaning is done by hand. We will never clean with a pressure washer, or any type of power tool. We do not use wire brushes. We do not clean with household detergents, bleach, ammonia, acids, etc. All of these methods are extremely harmful and will cause irreversible damage to a marker. We clean with non-acidic, biodegradable solutions that are time tested and used by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Park Service. Estimates are based on the condition and size of the marker.

  • We document and photograph all cleaning, resets and repair jobs .

  • Before and after photos are made available.

Prices start at $45.00

Resetting

Although we never think about it, the earth, or the ground beneath our feet, does shift and move. This causes objects to also shift and move including tombstones and markers. It is common to see markers tilted or leaning in various positions. If not corrected the marker will eventually fall over causing it to break, or it could even cause bodily harm to someone. Resetting normally involves lifting the marker and installing a new base or pad for the maker to rest upon. This method may vary depending upon the type or style of the marker, but irregardless, it is much cheaper than repairing a broken stone.

Estimates are based upon the size of the marker and the type of repair needed. Small markers and footstones start at $95.00.

Repair of Broken Stones and Infills

The repair of broken headstones takes time and patience. The most common repairs involve marble tablet markers that have fallen over and have one break or several breaks. Sometimes the repair can be made in the cemetery and at other times the stone will need to be removed and repaired in the shop. The process can take days to weeks. Each marker and repair is unique and for this reason estimates are made on an individual basis.

-All repairs and resets are made with materials that are compatible with the marker that is being worked on.

-We do not and will not make repairs with concrete or portland cements.

-Never expect "brand new" results. This is simply an impossible task.

-If a marker is deemed too fragile to clean or repair, we will tell you.
